Round Structure

Open Qualifying

Open qualifying will typically take place on the first day/evening of the National Yo-Yo Contest. All competitors who have not otherwise qualified into the preliminaries, semi-finals, or finals will start here.

The open qualifying freestyles are 30 seconds in length and the competitor must choose from a pre-selected set of music for his or her performance. The competitor will need to let the judges and/or sound manager know which song to play when they are asked to the stage. Open qualifying freestyles will only be scored based on the technical execution component (clicker).

The pre-selected music is courtesy of the IYYF and is available here>>

Preliminaries

Preliminary freestyles will typically take place on the second day of the National Yo-Yo Contest. The preliminary freestyles are 60 seconds (1-minute) in length. The competitor is free to use his or her own pre-selected music. Preliminary freestyles are scored based on the current NYYL/IYYF scoring system for preliminaries.

The top 20% (rounded up) of competitors from the Open Qualifying round in each division will advance into the preliminaries.

Competitors who have competed in a National Yo-Yo League contest within the competition year may be seeded into preliminaries and bypass the open qualifying round in the following manner:

For a designated State Contest (and other recognized contests) the top 20% (rounded up) of the competitors in a division qualify into the preliminary round at the National Yo-Yo Contest. For a designated Regional Contest the top 33% (rounded up) of the competitors in a division qualify into the preliminary round at the National Yo-Yo Contest.

Semi-finals

Semi-final freestyles will typically take place on the second or third day of the National Yo-Yo Contest. Semi-finals freestyles are 90 seconds (1-minute 30-seconds) in length. The competitor is free to use his or her own pre-selected music. Semi-finals freestyles are scored based on the current NYYL/IYYF scoring system for preliminaries.

The top 20 competitors in 1A, as well as the top 10 competitors in 2A, 3A, 4A, and 5A will advance from the preliminaries to the semi-finals.

Competitors who have competed in a National Yo-Yo League Regional Contest within the competition year may be seeded into the semi-finals in the following manner:

For a designated Regional Contest, the winner of the division qualifies into the semi-final round at the National Yo-Yo Contest. (For the 2017 National Yo-Yo Contest, the top placing competitor who resides in the Region earns a spot into the semi-final round.)

Finals

Finals freestyles will take place on the last day of the National Yo-Yo Contest. Finals freestyles are 180 seconds (3 minutes) in length. The competitor is free to use his or her pre-selected music. Finals freestyles are scored based on the current NYYL/IYYF scoring system for finals.

The top 10 competitors in 1A, as well as the top 5 competitors in 2A, 3A, 4A, and 5A will advance from the semi-finals to the finals.

The National Champion from the previous year in that division qualifies into the finals at the National Yo-Yo Contest.

Seeding Flexibility

Based on competitor counts, the Open Qualifying and/or Preliminary rounds may be scratched. Competitors would instead advance to the Preliminary or Semi-Final rounds respectively. The decision to scratch a round and advance competitors to the next round may be done with the agreement of the contest director and the head judge after registration closes.
